The music I like lots of different types of music, like the movies it’s probably easier putting down what I don’t like. Funny how negative things stick in your mind better than the positive ones (feel a rant coming on). I don’t like really heavy music, like hardcore dance or thrash metal, also not a fan of opera. Although I like Frank Sinatra as a singer I don’t like the style of music typical to him and the other lounge singers – face it guys, even if it’s in tune you can’t sing words that have no inherent tune! Deep improvisational Jazz also bugs me – if I get it and see where the rhythm is going its cool though. Needless to say I don’t like the talentless shite churned out by a lot of pop bands. ABBA needs to die. Cher is not so good, and god help me when it comes to Tina Turner – give it up. I do like indie, rock, jazz, some pop, trip-hop, ska, alternative…bla bla bla. It’s not really about the genres, much more about the bands and style, oh and whether or not they have any talent. That’s probably why the list of bands is so much easier to produce than a definitive guide to anyone’s taste. I’ve not been to as many gigs as I’d like, although I also can’t remember the names of all the bands I’ve seen – a lot of smaller local type bands during the days at the union. I’m sure there are a few gigs I’ve missed out, but the list starts in 96/97 so I’m not doing too badly! I have at least seen the following (chronological order): Travis Oasis Texas Robbie Williams The All Saints (took my sister, so don’t shoot me) 3rd Eye Blind The seahorses Natalie Merchant Dodgy Paul Weller Vanessa Carlton Barenaked Ladies Kordoba Girl Said No The Zutons Feeder REM I need to make a bigger effort to get to more concerts, right now I’m short on money but usually I can’t find people to come along or I find out way too late that someone is playing near me. Aberdeen isn’t exactly a massive cultural centre, so usually only the bigger bands make it this far north, this coupled with the fact that there are only really 2 large live venues left in the city, does limit who I can see both in choice and by how much the tickets cost! Grrr. Another Excuse I’m sticking to. I’m trying to get to more local gigs; they’re cheap if not free and usually have an interesting crowd – and a better bar – compared to the big concerts. I’d love to find a good jazz club/bar, because that’s definitely one side of my musical taste that is under-developed. I don’t know of any in Aberdeen.
Bands I like
I'm sure there are others, but those are all the ones I have folders of mp3's belonging to. I'm sure if I actually went through my CD's I'd find a few more.
