The Technical Archive

This stuff is a collection of useful information I’ve found over a fair amount of time and lots of web searches. I can only vouch for some of its accuracy, but it’s what I use as a reference and has not let me down any more than things like workshop manuals or the Haynes comic books. I am primarily interested in the Defender information, as that’s wot I’ve got, but I have included any info that might be useful.

Tyre Sizes

People seem to get confused over tyre/wheel sizes, largely due to lack of understanding, I suspect. ‘Metric’ tyre sizes are one of those interesting things that combine imperial and metric measurements, making it hard to easily compare Metric and Imperial sizes (, unless you either know beforehand or have a bit of paper to work it out!) oh yeah and there are 2 different types of Imperial sizes.

Also in some cases you have to assume ‘normal’ aspect ratios. I have only included information that is really pertinent to Landrover compatible sizes, although some information is generic.

Sankey Trailers

Ex-military ¾ Ton, the best kind of trailer: Produced since the early 70’s in a multitude of varieties. The later variety is known as the ‘wide track’ and has a drop down tailgate, all others are known as ‘narrow track’ and will typically have a fixed tub unless they are a special application e.g. Workshop or Radio Trailer. Some have a fixed hoop, requiring the NATO hitch to be able to rotate; there are also some with a hoop capable of twisting. The trailers stack nicely, as displayed by John Craddock Ltd when they had 100’s of them, it was also common practice to have a NATO hitch on the back of Sankey’s, allowing them to be ‘daisy chained’ so that many could be towed by one vehicle. The towing hoop is much higher than a standard 50mm towing ball type coupling, this allows the NATO hitch to be attached directly to the rear cross-member of Landrovers.

The workshop manual can be found here. Here’s some pictures of mine:
